for Successful Reentry

Authors:  Phillip Amerine and John Dowdell

This new student workbook uses the problem solving method to assist students in the decision-making process on reentry issues.  The book takes students through the problem solving process in six major domains.  Students will examine critical issues in their life circumstances in each area and will develop action plans for problem resolution – starting with their current situation of incarceration and transitioning to effective community reentry.

Reentry Domains                                           Examples of Problem Issues

Physical Well-being                                       housing, health, hygiene, substance abuse

Mental Well-being                                         emotional needs, spiritual needs, leisure,

Personal Well-being                                      self worth, capability, influences and communication

Family Well-being                                          relationships with partners, children, parents, friends

Employment and Education                         educational/career goals, essential soft skills

Community Functioning.                              meeting release requirements, using community resources

The workbook also incorporates readings and reflection on the reentry domain.  There are optional readings from Dr. Bill Cosby and Dr. Alvin Poussaint’s Come On, People: On the Path From Victim to Victors text.  Cosby and Poussaint worked extensively with the Correctional Education Association for distribution of the text in correctional institutions across the nation.  The text calls for a re-thinking of the “victim mentality” and, together with the Developing Problem-solving Strategies for Successful Re-entry workbook, builds a powerful resource for moving incarcerated students toward ownership of their reentry plans.
